Do I qualify for a Core Furnished Tenancy?

If you are applying for a Core Furnished Tenancy you must:

Have been assessed as homeless and have a current homeless application with the City of Edinburgh Council.

How do I get a Core Furnished Tenancy?

If you are offered a new home and need help with furniture you can ask your Homelessness Case Officer, Temporary Accommodation Officer, Lettings Officer or Support Agency to refer you to the scheme. The Furnished Tenancy project will confirm acceptance of the referral and make arrangements to furnish your new home.

The Furnished Tenancy project will be responsible for maintaining the core furnishings provided over the period of the lifetime of the service charge. The service charge is £10.00 per week and is covered by housing benefit if the tenant is claiming benefits.

What furniture will be provided?

Any 3 items from these 5:

  • Bed(s) - per person/couple
  • Electric cooker
  • Fridge
  • Floor coverings - occupied bedrooms living room, hall, kitchen and bathroom
  • Curtains - all rooms

Who is responsible for the tenancy?

Your Landlord (Neighbourhood office)

Your neighbourhhod office will be responsible for management of the property including all property repairs, tenancy and service charge sign up, management and enforcement of the tenancy agreement, collection of rent and service charge, management of rent and service charge arrears.

The Core Furnished Tenancy Project

Will be responsible for providing the furniture items, the maintenance and repair of core furnishings except for items that are deliberately and maliciously damaged or damaged as a result of wilful neglect or improper use. Recharging for items maliciously damaged or stolen by the tenant.

Your Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for the payment of the rent and service charge
  • You must take care and make responsible use of the furnishings provided
  • You must report any defects or repairs needed
  • You must provide access to the project's appointed contractors for the purposes of routine maintenance and repair
  • If you request replacement furniture an additional charge may be applied to cover the cost of this.

You should note that you have to pay for the furniture for 5 years before you have the option of buying it.
