Additional Support for Learning

Children may experience problems in learning for a variety of reasons. Additional support needs are identified through observation and assessment by staff and through discussion with pupils and parents. Where appropriate, the child's needs will be investigated further by referral to specialist support services.

A range of additional support is available and targeted according to the child's needs. This may include additional support for bilingual pupils and gifted and talented children, as well as support for pupils with speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties and emotional or behavioural problems.

All schools have a significant role in meeting children's additional support needs and this is taken into account across all aspects of the school. This includes:

• developing a positive climate in the school, ensuring that pupils feel welcome and involved
• making adjustments to the learning environment, for example, improvements to acoustics or physical access
• providing an appropriate curriculum
• ensuring an effective approach to teaching and learning.

Additional support for learning is provided where required and this may include, adult support in class, support from other staff in school and support from specialist services and agencies according to a child's needs.
