Wildlife and biodiversity

Edinburgh’s natural habitats are many and varied from the steep rock faces of Castle Rock to the semi-natural grasslands of Holyrood Park and the woodlands of Corstorphine Hill, to the 24 kms of coastline along the Firth of Forth.

We have nine Sites of Special Scientific Interest, six Local Nature Reserves and 48 local biodiversity sites.

Local Nature Reserves provide a valuable opportunity for the public to see plants and animals, common and rare, in a natural environment. Our Countryside Ranger Services manage the sites in conjunction with local community groups, to enhance access, improve habitats and promote environmental education.

Edinburgh Biodiversity Action Plan

The Edinburgh Biodiversity Partnership is the group of organisations carrying out wildlife conservation projects in Edinburgh. The partnership delivers the Edinburgh Biodiversity Action Plan, which outlines conservation activities for priority species and habitats in the Edinburgh area. Gardening in Harmony with Nature

Allotments and gardens, especially those in cities, are important habitats for wildlife as they provide food, shelter and breeding sites. Some of the best ideas of how biodiversity can be enriched in gardens and allotments are brought together in our ‘Gardening in Harmony with Nature’ booklet.
