Equipment and adaptations

The Community Equipment Service (CES) is a partnership between City of Edinburgh Council, NHS Lothian, East and Midlothian Councils. The aim of the service is to provide equipment that allows people with illness or disabilities to remain living at home. The client group is from all age ranges. How equipment and adaptations can help.

What does CES provide?

  • Equipment
    • A range of equipment and adaptations is available at the request of health care professionals following the assessment of an individual's needs.
    • Some items are available by self-selection from a catalogue without requiring professional assessment. See below.
  • Bathing Assessment Service (City of Edinburgh)
    • The early provision of bathing equipment allows people to bathe safely, prevent unnecessary hazards and reduce the risk of falls. BAS staff visit clients, assess need for bathing and toileting and provide equipment and/or adaptations in one visit. Referral to this service is through Social Care Direct.
  • Rapid Response Service (City of Edinburgh)
    • CES supports the Sector Rapid Response teams and aims to provide a same day or next day urgent service to support people at home, prevent hospital admission and assist with hospital discharge.

How do I access these services?

  • Choose the item(s) you need from the catalogue and send the completed order form to the Community Equipment Service.  A colour hard copy of the catalogue can be requested from the Community Equipment Service. It is also available elsewhere e.g. via GP surgeries, hospitals and libraries and on request from Social Care Direct.
  • If your needs are more complex and you require a professional assessment, contact Social Care Direct.
