Community service orders

As an alternative to a custodial sentence, Courts can impose on offenders a Community Service Order ranging from 80 to 300 hours. Offenders subject to a Community Service Order undertake a wide range of work in the community in accordance with National Objectives and Standards.

A Criminal Justice worker assesses each offender and places them in unpaid work either individually or as part of a group. Community agencies supervise the work of some offenders and Social Work staff supervise the remainder. Working in supervised groups, offenders may undertake tasks such as painting and decorating, gardening and household removals for disabled or older people. Individuals may work in youth clubs, lunch clubs and classes in community centres. In the summer months, offenders may assist with children's play schemes or outings for disadvantaged groups. Some offenders bring special skills and talents and every effort is made to use these in Community Service.

Experience suggests that direct contact between the offender and the beneficiary proves most successful and rewarding for all concerned.
