A Probation Order is one of the community-based sentencing options available to the Court. A Probation Order might include one or more of the following conditions:
- individual supervision
- a residential component
- a requirement to carry out Community Service
- attendance for medical/psychiatric treatment
- attendance at a specific programme designed to reduce offending or offending-related behaviour, e.g. drugs, alcohol, road traffic, domestic violence, sex offending.
Criminal Justice social workers based in Social Work Centres supervise Probation Orders according to National Standards. An offender who consents to a Probation Order may be subject to breach proceedings if they fail to comply with the terms of the order.
