Local Housing Allowance Information

If you are a private tenant on a low income you may be entitled to a Local Housing Allowance.

You are not eligible to receive a Local Housing Allowance if:

  • You rent your property from the council
  • Your landlord is a housing association
  • Your rent has been registered as a "fair rent"
  • Your tenancy started before 1989
  • You live somewhere where you are provided with care, support or supervision
  • You live in a caravan, mobile home or houseboat.

Please read What is Local Housing Allowance? to see how Local Housing Allowance is calculated and how much may be due to you.

Council and housing association tenants are not affected by Local Housing Allowance and can continue to claim Housing Benefit in the normal manner.
